Day 3:
We ventured a few hours from home to the Wilds for a morning
safari.
The view from the top where the welcome center is located is
beautiful. The morning was a bit hazy
but it burned off with the brightening sun.
The temperature was perfect.
We boarded our tour bus.
Good thing we arrived early.
It was tough finding a seat. The
bus was about to leave with only the four of us on it when some last minute
people decided to join the tour for a whopping total of eight on the bus. We enjoyed the freedom to move around and take
pictures from better vantage points because the bus was nearly empty.
This was the first animal we encountered on our tour. He is one of the three types of deer they
have on the 10,000 acre property.
He crossed the street and caught sight of this gal. We laughed at him chasing her around and
making a racket. He eventually gave up.
We pulled up next to the Bactrian Camels.
The kids loved how close we were to the animals.
“Don’t worry, I don’t spit.
That’s a myth. But, please excuse
me while I chew my cud.”
The baby camel was wandering around alone.
Next we saw the Persian Onagers.
They came right up to the bus. Our tour guide said the Onagers are smart and
come up to the bus because the air from the exhaust and engine blow the flies
off of them.
There were three baby Onagers and one snuck around the other
side of the bus. “Momma can’t find me!”
“Darn! She found me!”
This was the first rhino that we saw. It is the Greater One-Horned Asian Rhino.
These cuties are Przewalski’s Wild Horses. There’s a baby to the right snoozing.
When we first arrived and were on the top of the hill we
could see the giraffes through our cameras.
They were up close to the trail.
Unfortunately, by the time we got to the giraffe area, they
were hiding.
Abby was so excited to see the “ebra!”
The Wilds also has a Southern White Rhino which has two
horns. There are far more of these
rhinos at the Wilds than there are the Asian Rhino.
We had a stop on the tour for a presentation with
animals. Everyone got to pet a baby
crocodile, opossum, and an armadillo.
The staff also brought out a sloth but we weren’t able to
pet him. He hung on the branch and ate
veggie treats.
After the safari was over we were dropped off at another
building where we had lunch, the kids picked out an animal each, and then it
was time to go. We had a great time and
plan to go back for a longer safari when the kids get a bit older.
