September 11

The Field of Honor was filled with 3,000 flags.  One flag for every life lost on September 11, 2001.

I went there to remember.  I went there hoping to understand.

Never since September 11, 2001 have I been able to fully wrap my mind around what happened and how many people died.  We hear the number, 3,000, and think, “Wow, that’s a lot and it’s horrible.”

I hoped that being in this place with the 3,000 eight foot tall 3’x5’ flags that are tangible would help me to conceptualize that huge number.  I tried to imagine one person where each flag stood.

It didn’t work.  I was awestruck to be sure but I still can’t fully grasp it.  September 11, 2001 was so far beyond what any of us could have imagined, that it isn’t fully understandable.  It never will be.

Our world changed.  Our country changed.  We individually changed.  And we will never be the same.

We will never forget.  God bless America.
